Lynn Dohm, Executive Director of Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS), is driving change in security and women in tech by closing the gender gap through mentorship, education, and community support. With over 20 years of experience, she leads initiatives that empower women to thrive in the cybersecurity industry. We spoke to her about how WiCyS is advancing diversity and creating pathways for women in security and technology.
devmio: Hello Lynn, thank you so much for answering our questions. What first got you interested in cybersecurity or technology in general?
Lynn Dohm: My journey into cybersecurity began with my first job at the National Centers for System Security and Information Assurance (CSSIA) at Moraine Valley Community College. This was part of an NSF-funded grant, and it introduced me to the field of cybersecurity, which at the time felt almost mystical and unattainable. As I learned more, I realized how essential and achievable it is. This sparked my passion for making cybersecurity more accessible, especially for women, given the significant opportunities for career growth and financial security.
devmio: Could you tell us about your career path and how it led to your current position as executive director of Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS)?
Lynn Dohm: My career path has been deeply rooted in cybersecurity education and workforce initiatives. My involvement with WiCyS started in 2015 in a supportive role, and I attended my first WiCyS conference in 2018. That experience was transformative, connecting me with a community that shared my vision of a more inclusive cybersecurity industry. In 2019, I was honored to step into the role of Executive Director, where I continue to drive inclusion and allyship to mobilize the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in cybersecurity.
devmio: You mentioned the significant gender gap in cybersecurity. What specific initiatives is WiCyS undertaking to close this gap and encourage more women to enter the field?
Lynn Dohm: At WiCyS, we’re addressing this gap through a variety of initiatives. Our Cyber Talent Study and State of Inclusion Report provide data-driven insights to help employers improve retention and representation. We also host conferences, mentorship programs, and skills-based learning opportunities that empower women to enter and thrive in cybersecurity. By building a strong, supportive community and collaborating with strategic partners, we create pathways for women to excel in this field.
devmio: Your commentary emphasizes the need for industry investment. What specific actions can organizations take to not only build a more diverse pipeline of female cybersecurity talent but also retain them within the field?
Lynn Dohm: Organizations can take several actions, starting with equitable hiring practices and family-friendly policies. Providing mentorship, sponsorship, and leadership training programs are key to career advancement. It’s also vital to create an inclusive culture where diverse voices are valued and heard. Organizations should actively promote allyship and build environments that encourage collaboration and empowerment, ensuring women feel welcomed and equipped to succeed.
devmio: You mentioned the “leaky pipe” phenomenon. What are some of the biggest obstacles that lead women to leave cybersecurity careers, and how can WiCyS (and the industry) address those challenges?
Lynn Dohm: The “leaky pipe” is caused by factors like unconscious bias, lack of visible role models, and workplace cultures that feel isolating or unwelcoming. To address these, WiCyS focuses on mentorship, creating community-driven support, and amplifying success stories to inspire and empower women. Additionally, organizations must prioritize inclusivity and ensure equal opportunities for professional development, growth and recognition.
devmio: Cybersecurity is a rapidly evolving field. How is WiCyS preparing and supporting women for the changing needs of the cybersecurity workforce?
Lynn Dohm: WiCyS prepares women through ongoing education, skills-based training, and networking opportunities. Our programming is designed to be adaptable, addressing the latest trends and technologies like AI and cloud security. By cultivating collaboration and providing resources, we equip women to stay ahead of industry changes and confidently navigate their cybersecurity careers.
devmio: Can you share a personal anecdote or story that highlights the importance of your work at WiCyS, or perhaps your own experience as a woman in cybersecurity?
Lynn Dohm: One moment that stands out was at my first WiCyS conference in 2018. It was the first time I felt a true sense of community in cybersecurity. Hearing the stories of other women and seeing the tangible impact of WiCyS initiatives solidified my commitment to this field. Witnessing how our work transforms lives and opens doors for women continues to inspire me every day.
devmio: As Executive Director of WiCyS, can you share some of the organization’s biggest successes in promoting women in cybersecurity?
Lynn Dohm: WiCyS has earned multiple recognitions, including being named Ally of the Year in 2020 and 2021. This year alone, we’ve expanded to offer more than 100 programs, engaging over 41,000 participants. Additionally, we’re proud to see our international growth, with representation now spanning 103 countries. However, the most meaningful achievement is hearing the success stories of our members who credit WiCyS for shaping their careers. Those personal testimonials truly reflect the impact of our work.
Lynn Dohm: Our goal is to continue building a diverse and inclusive cybersecurity workforce. For 2025, we are prioritizing initiatives designed to support mid-career individuals who are preparing for the next step in their journeys—whether that’s advancing their technical expertise or transitioning into leadership roles. These efforts include targeted mentorship programs, leadership training, and specialized skill-building opportunities. Aspiring women can engage with WiCyS by becoming members, participating in our events, and utilizing the wealth of resources we offer, including our global community and tailored programs. By working together, we can create lasting change and empower women to thrive while strengthening the industry as a whole.
